FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Orthodontic treatment can be beneficial at any age, but it is typically recommended to have an initial orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. This allows the orthodontist to identify any potential issues and determine the most appropriate timing for treatment. However, orthodontic treatment can also be effective for adults, and there is no upper age limit for seeking orthodontic care.

Orthodontic appliances can vary depending on the specific needs of the patient. Traditional braces, which consist of metal brackets and wires, are commonly used for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign®, are an increasingly popular option that offers a more discreet and removable alternative. Once you or your child have finished treatment, we also provide custom retainers to maintain your new beautiful smile!

The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the individual’s response to treatment. On average, orthodontic treatment typically lasts between one to three years. Regular adjustments and visits to the orthodontist are necessary to ensure the progress and effectiveness of the treatment plan.

In addition to practicing your routine oral habits like brushing twice a day, flossing and rinsing, you will need to take extra care of your new appliances–especially our braces patients. We recommend our braces patients use a fine needle brush to get those hard to reach areas–and remove any extra food that may cling to your brackets and wires! You will also have to avoid foods like card handies, popcorn and caramels as they can damage your brackets or cause a wire to come loose.

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics or Phase I treatment, refers to orthodontic intervention performed on children at a younger age, typically between the ages of 7 and 10. The goal of early orthodontic treatment is to address specific dental and skeletal issues in order to guide the growth and development of the jaw and teeth, and to create a more favorable environment for the eruption of permanent teeth.

“Both my brother and I got braces at Wake Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry by Dr. Collie. The office has a cool surfing vibe, and all the people who work there are nice and friendly. Our teeth look great. Dr. Collie was always fun to talk to about school and sports. My mom now sees Dr. McCutchen for Invisalign. We love seeing my mom’s new smile!”
